About James Purefoy

James Purefoy plays Mark Antony in Rome. He gives the character an appetite for pleasure and a readiness for violence without making either a separate performance. The charm is genuine; it is not a promise that he is safe company.

Purefoy's television roles also include Joe Carroll in The Following, Hap Collins in Hap and Leonard and Laurens Bancroft in Altered Carbon. His film work includes A Knight's Tale, Solomon Kane, Ironclad and Fisherman's Friends.

Antony is a particularly good use of his relaxed delivery. An amused remark can carry a threat without losing the amusement. Opposite Ciarán Hinds, he provides a more openly physical and impulsive presence, helping make Rome's political relationships feel personal.
