Mayans M.C. is the rare spin-off that grows into its own thing. Visually, Mayans M.C. is sun-bleached, sand-blown and unafraid of stillness. Sutter's signature long, music-scored montages are here, but James's influence pulls the show in a more introspective direction as it goes. Later seasons are shot with a grainy, almost Western patience, and the Spanish-language scenes — subtitled, never dubbed — are some of the series' most powerful.

For the Santo Padre brothers themselves, it's the one place in the world where they are fully known — which is exactly why it is so dangerous.

The show also circles, insistently, around the border itself. The economic asymmetry, the cartel politics, the way US policy ripples south, the way cartel violence ripples north. Very few American crime dramas take this subject on with this much seriousness.
