Julia Garner

Julia Garner plays Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna. The accent is immediately noticeable, but the more important choice is the certainty beneath it. Garner makes Anna behave as though other people's reasonable doubts are evidence of their inadequacy.

She is also Ruth Langmore in Ozark, a role for which she won three Emmys. Ruth and Anna can both control a conversation, but their rhythms, expectations and ways of applying pressure are very different.

Garner's other television work includes Kimberly Breland in The Americans, Dirty John and Maniac. On film, The Assistant gives her a much quieter central performance, while her earlier work includes Martha Marcy May Marlene and Electrick Children.

Those contrasts are worth seeking out. Garner can make a character conspicuously abrasive or barely able to voice a concern; neither depends simply on changing her appearance.
