Allison Tolman

Allison Tolman plays Molly Solverson in Fargo. Molly's patient intelligence gives the first season a person to trust without making her dull or infallible. Tolman is particularly good at listening: the slight pause before a follow-up question often tells us she has noticed something the speaker hoped would pass.

Born in Texas, Tolman studied theatre at Baylor University and worked in theatre and comedy before Fargo brought her widespread attention. Her performance earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. It was a substantial introduction to an actor whose confidence on screen comes from paying attention rather than demanding it.

Her later television work includes Downward Dog, in which she plays Nan, and Emergence, as police chief Jo Evans. She takes a different direction as Alma Fillcot in Why Women Kill, where social aspiration gives the comedy a darker edge. These roles allow her to work beyond the sensible, dependable qualities that make Molly so appealing.

Tolman also appears in the films Krampus and The Gift. Across comedy, thriller and horror, she is convincing as someone with an ordinary life before the extraordinary situation arrives. That grounding is valuable in Fargo: the stranger the people around Molly become, the more her reactions help us believe in the place.
