Sonja Sohn

Sonja Sohn plays Kima Greggs in The Wire. Her directness gives the investigation a practical centre. Kima is attentive to the work in front of her, and Sohn makes that competence convincing without turning it into a performance of toughness.

Before The Wire, Sohn co-wrote and starred in the film Slam. Her later work includes Body of Proof, and she has directed the documentaries Baltimore Rising and The Slow Hustle.

What I value in her Wire performance is the absence of fuss. A question sounds like a question being asked by someone who needs an answer. Around colleagues who are more inclined to make themselves the subject of the conversation, that concentration gives Kima a distinct place in the ensemble.
