Bryce Dallas Howard plays Lacie in Nosedive, the pastel-coloured social-rating nightmare in Black Mirror. Howard makes Lacie's eagerness to please painfully recognisable. A smile can look rehearsed, hopeful and close to collapse within the same exchange, which is exactly what that world demands of her.

Howard's film roles include The Help and the Jurassic World films. She also works as a director, including episodes of The Mandalorian. Nosedive is a particularly good showcase for her acting because the artificial politeness cannot simply be a joke. Lacie has to believe that behaving correctly will get her somewhere, even while the audience can see the strain.
