Alexandra Daddario

Alexandra Anna Daddario is an American actress whose career spans soap operas, young-adult blockbusters, prestige cable drama, and horror, and whose breakout role as a bratty, brittle heiress in the first season of Mike White's The White Lotus finally secured the mainstream critical recognition that had eluded her through more than a decade of steady working-actor credits. Born on 16 March 1986 in New York City and raised on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, she is the eldest of three children born to Christina, a lawyer, and Richard Daddario, a prosecutor who served as the New York Police Department's counterterrorism chief. Her younger brother Matthew Daddario is also an actor, best known for the Freeform series Shadowhunters, and her younger sister Catharine has worked in television as well. The Daddario family has deep roots in New York civic life; her paternal grandfather Emilio Daddario was a Democratic congressman from Connecticut, and her Italian, Irish, English, Hungarian, and Slovak ancestry is something she has discussed with interest in interviews over the years.

Daddario decided she wanted to act at eleven years old, and by sixteen she had landed her first professional job: a recurring role as troubled teen Laurie Lewis on the long-running ABC daytime drama All My Children, where she appeared in 2002 and 2003. She attended the Brearley School and the Professional Children's School in Manhattan, studied briefly at Marymount Manhattan College, and trained at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and the Beverly Hills Playhouse. After aging out of daytime, she accumulated the kind of early-career television credits familiar to any New York-based young actor of her generation, including guest spots on Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Damages, White Collar, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, along with a small role in the indie film The Squid and the Whale.

Her first true lead came in 2010 when she was cast as Annabeth Chase, the sword-wielding daughter of Athena, in Chris Columbus's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, adapted from Rick Riordan's best-selling fantasy novel series. She reprised the role in the 2013 sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The films were commercial performers rather than franchise-defining hits, but they established her as a viable lead in genre material and introduced her to a young audience. In 2013 she also took the lead in the 3D slasher revival Texas Chainsaw 3D, playing Heather Miller, a young woman who discovers she has inherited both a Texas mansion and its homicidal occupant Leatherface; the film opened at number one at the domestic box office.

That same year she delivered the performance that first made industry watchers take serious notice. In the second episode of HBO's True Detective, she played Lisa Tragnetti, a court reporter entangled with Woody Harrelson's detective Marty Hart, in a brief but startling nude scene that dominated post-broadcast conversation. The role was small but the series' prestige halo lifted her profile considerably, and she followed it with the Dwayne Johnson disaster tentpole San Andreas in 2015, playing his estranged daughter Blake Gaines in what became a global hit grossing over 470 million dollars. She reteamed with Johnson for the 2017 big-screen version of Baywatch, playing lifeguard Summer Quinn opposite Zac Efron, and led the thriller The Layover for director William H. Macy the same year.

Between studio assignments she continued to work in indie film and smaller character pieces, including Burying the Ex, Hall Pass, Bereavement, When We First Met, Can You Keep a Secret?, the Rainn Wilson comedy We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and the Sundance premiere We Summon the Darkness. On television she took the lead in the 2021 Epix limited series Why Women Kill season two and voiced characters for animated projects. None of this prepared viewers, however, for the comic-horror precision she brought to Rachel Patton, the newlywed journalist honeymooning at a Hawaiian resort with her insufferable husband Shane in the first season of The White Lotus in 2021. Mike White's satire of wealth, service, and American entitlement became an immediate awards-season phenomenon, and Daddario earned her first Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work, along with a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination and a share of the ensemble's Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Reviewers singled out the way she tracked Rachel's dawning recognition that she had married her way into a life she did not actually want.

The White Lotus nomination opened the door to leading roles in prestige genre television. In 2023 she headlined AMC's Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches as Dr Rowan Fielding, a neurosurgeon who discovers she is the heir to a dynasty of New Orleans witches bound to a malevolent spirit called Lasher, a role she reprised for subsequent seasons as the series became a core title in AMC's Immortal Universe of Anne Rice adaptations alongside Interview with the Vampire. She also appeared in the 2022 horror film Wildflower and lent her voice to animated projects, while continuing to take indie and supporting film work between television seasons.

Away from work, Daddario had a relationship with her Texas Chainsaw 3D co-star Trey Songz and briefly dated Baywatch co-star Zac Efron, though she later characterised the Efron stories as tabloid invention. She became engaged to producer Andrew Form, formerly of Platinum Dunes and known for the A Quiet Place and The Purge films, in December 2021, and the couple married in a small New Orleans ceremony in June 2022. In October 2024 she gave birth to the couple's first child, a daughter. A longtime advocate for Alzheimer's research, she has supported the Hilarity for Charity organisation founded by Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen, and she maintains a significant social-media presence with tens of millions of followers who have tracked her transition from teen-franchise lead to established adult dramatic actress.
