Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton in 1923. Han Solo and Indiana Jones made him one of cinema's most recognisable leading men, but Blade Runner, Witness and The Fugitive are equally useful reminders of the range behind that familiarity. On television, he also plays therapist Paul Rhoades in Shrinking.

Jacob suits his ability to make authority look lived-in. Ford gives him the impatience of somebody who has spent years taking responsibility and now expects other people to understand why his answer should settle the matter. That can be funny, formidable or troublesome, depending on who is listening.

His scenes with Helen Mirren are the strongest immediate reason to watch 1923. Their marriage has warmth and accumulated irritation, with neither actor needing to underline either. A look across a room can suggest a much longer conversation.

The performance also allows age to mean something. Jacob has presence, but he is not insulated from the work or the uncertainty around him. Ford makes the determination convincing without making the man invulnerable.
